We saw a lot of
interesting developments in the year 2000. The year proved that small
game companies could succeed where the big companies failed.
With the release of Combat Mission from the small company, Battlefront.com,
wargaming was changed forever; wargames could have great
graphics, but not at the expense of gameplay. The 3D real time strategy
market was
flooded with titles ranging from extremely poor (Force Commander) to game
of the year quality (Ground Control, Sacrifice). Despite the
onslaught of 3D RTS games, 2D real time strategy games survived and
even prospered. Red
Alert 2, Warlords: Battlecry and the Age of Empires 2 Expansion: The
Conquerors all won many loyal fans. As for the turn-based gaming
genre, we did not
see many releases this year. However, there was a revival of the 4X
games with the release of Reach for the Stars!, Space Empires IV and
Call to Power 2. So without further a due, we present our picks for
the best and worst strategy games of 2000!
