Best Audio of 2000: Shogun
DEVELOPER : The Creative Assembly
PUBLISHER :
EA

In our voting for best audio, there really was no contest. Totalwar's Shogun stood head and shoulders above any competition. With a soundtrack that was atmospheric without being repetitive, engaging without being distracting, the high-quality score was worth turning off the monitor and just listening to. Drawing inspiration from the hayashikata - the musical accompaniment to classical Japanese 'noh' theater - the music is meant to engage the player, and intensify the emotional experience. This it most certainly does. The sound effects are likewise superb, as any player who has had his defensive positions set up, only to shudder at the rumbling sound of approaching heavy cavalry. Shogun is an excellent example of a game using audio to draw the player entirely into the game, and well deserves our Editor's Choice award for Best Audio in 2000.
