Most Disappointing Game of 2000: Squad Leader
DEVELOPER : Random Games
PUBLISHER :
Hasbro

Gamers hoping that Squad Leader would be an addictive squad-level strategy game akin to X-Com or Jagged Alliance got a rude surprise this year. Saying "X-Com, Jagged Alliance, and Squad Leader" is like saying "Albert Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and Pauly Shore." One of these things does not belong. That Squad Leader didn't meet expectations is forgivable; that it is barely functional is not. Even turn-based games need responsive controls and intuitive interfaces, neither of which appeared in Squad Leader. Once again, the answer to the question "How hard can it be to make a decent squad level strategy game?" is "Apparently, pretty damn hard."
