This is probably one of the first times you have seen this in a gaming site's "Best Of" awards. Of course, you probably know that not every game that goes away with one of our awards is chosen unanimously. But the one that receives the majority has to win, its the democratic thing to do. So what happens when you don't have a majority? In fact, what happens when some of our reviewers can't even think of a game worthy of the award? That's right, no one wins, and unfortunately this was the case for this year's award. We pretty much all agreed that Alpha Centauri had the best storyline when it was released, with players literally weaving the story as they played. But we searched and could not find anything this year with that oomph a game like Alpha Centauri has that makes it an outstanding and gripping story. Don't get us wrong, there were great games, but none made us feel like we were reading an outstanding novel. But I must mention two games that were close to receiving an award if we had been able to come to a majority. The two up in the air were Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2, and Homeworld: Cataclysm. Red Alert 2 had some extremely humorous and high quality cutscenes, and the whole extended Cold War atmosphere is outstanding and makes for some great missions, such as capturing the White House. Cataclysm made you care for your ships as you took them on a far-reaching journey to defeat an invasion by the Beast, and alien life-form that could literally infect other ships and turn them into slaves. But while these were great in their own right, we felt it best to leave this category with no winner. Perhaps 2001 will bring us a storyline of such high quality that we can award it as confidently as our other categories.
