Dune 2000

battlesm.jpg (4360 bytes)Sure, they gave us exactly what they said they would, be we expected more. More advanced units, better graphics by the way of Total Annihilation, etc. They basically cleaned up the graphics and added multiplayer (a few years too late) and threw in some nifty FMV scenes, but it just wasn’t enough. If you plan on updating a classic title, the least you could do is go all the way.

Runner Ups:

Cyberstorm 2: The original Missionforce: Cyberstorm remains the only game that resembles a tabletop version of Battletech, this one set in Sierra’s Earthsiege universe. The sequel ended up being a step backward. They went the way of MAX 2 (which qualifies for 3rd runner up), by combining RTS with turn-based, your choice. The problem? The turn based failed miserably. They went from hexagons to squares (?), essentially making this title work only in RTS mode.

Worst Company

Microprose

For not releasing Master of Magic 2, for killing Agents of Justice (and our only hope of getting a decent super hero game in this century), and than being assimilated by Hasbro. Exactly what group of boneheads is making the decisions over there? This once great game company has fallen flat on its face and REFUSES to get up. Refuses you say? Well, gee, the consumers are letting them know what two games they want to see most in the way of MOM 2 and Agents of Justice (and most wanted update to a game in the form of X-Com: Enemy Unknown), and the fact that we wanted a tabletop version of Battletech, but this company just refuses to listen to us. And now that there in Hasbro’s clutches? Well, we’re guaranteed a multitude of sequels for Civilization (I just hope somebody points out to them that Firaxis released the true sequel).
