Starcraft: Brood War

Starcraft was great hit in 1998. Although it didn't advance the genre in terms of techology, it did have personality combined with great graphics, unqiue races, engaging storyline and a balanced multiplayer option. Brood War did everything to expand on this. Everything about Starcraft: Brood War is pure quality. It offer us six new units, not just rehashed units, but original ones. It also gave us an immense single-player support with an engaging storyline. Some even say it surpassed Starcraft's campagins. Starcraft: Brood War definitely has our vote for best expansion of 1998.

Total Annihilation: The Core Contingency was a milestone as far as expansion packs are concerned. urbansm.jpg (5303 bytes) It introduced the standard new campaigns, entertaining but not overly important, but it expanded on the multiplayer experience in ways gamers could scarcely imagine. Dozens upon dozens of new units, combined with further dozens already released on the net, a mass of new multiplayer maps, and perhaps most impressive of all, totally new tilesets incorporating new styles of warfare, such are underwater. TA:CC placed the ball firmly in the court of other RTS developers, and it is because of it that today's expansion sets of of such a high standard.
