Starcraft

box.gif (8105 bytes)Starcraft hit the gaming scene like a raging animal in early '98 and it still refuses to relinquish it's spot as the no.1 RTS game in the world. Sporting colourful, well animated graphics, involving music, humorous sound effects, an intriguing storyline and beautiful cinematics it's no wonder it's popularity has endured so well, but it's true strength lies in it's infinitely complex yet amazingly simple gameplay. More than any other strategy game ever made, one can never truly master Starcraft, and the more you play the more you realise there is to discover. Indeed many have compared it to an advanced game of chess, and Blizzard's regular balance alterations help to keep the experience fresh. With no sign of it's support online diminishing, it appears Starcraft will remain the king of RTS for some time yet.

Runner-ups:

Caesar 3 has it all – a "romantic" time period, city building, warfare, strategy, campaigns and empire building. With the most recent patch, the few problems and annoyances with the original release have been fixed, making Caesar 3 an almost perfect strategy game.

Railroad Tycoon II captures the little boy and girl in all of us by allowing us to design our own train set. However, it goes much further than a simple train set. Railroad Tycoon II adds train routing, a complex cargo web and the thrill of high finance. Add to this a strong computer or Internet based opponent and you have a game that is sure to please the most hardened strategy gamer.
