Best and Worst Games of 1999

[Intro]
[Turn-based] [Wargame] [Real Time Strategy] [Expansion] [Multiplayer]
[Storyline] [Audio] [Surprising] [Disappointing] [Innovative] [Graphics]

After the banner year of 1998 (Rainbow 6, RRT2, etc) it's hard to believe 1999 could have done better for strategy gamers, but it did. Many of the top games were much-anticipated sequels or derivatives that generally lived up to their billing, but there were also quite a few surprises in new titles and innovations. One of the most notable trends of 1999 is the continual blurring of the differences between genres - strategy titles are developing better graphics and sound, first-person gameplay, and trying to accomplish more than the simple turn-based 4X games of yore. Ambitious game designers tackled everything from real time space ship combat to modeling gangster wars in the streets of Chicago and the inevitable winners were, of course, us consumers. Without further ado, we happily present the Strategy Gaming Online choices for Best of 1999.
