Most Innovative Title:
Homeworld

When I first heard about the new space 3D RTS in development, one thing that came in my mind was Starcraft’s slow-paced aerial combat system which certainly lacked any sort of dynamism or tactics. Homeworld brings a new dimension to the RTS battlefield but more importantly it takes advantage of a new advance 3D environment. As many RTS designers stated before, switching to 3D requires a solid gameplay related reason. Homeworld brings several such reasons to backup its decision. This includes an evasive mode for light ships allowing them to dodge better and to trade firepower for speed, an intuitive interface that provides easy z-axis movement and a solid individual unit AI that helps most ships in reestablishing their formation shortly after each strike. Homeworld assumed a lot of risk, broke the old rules and succeeded in becoming one of the most original games ever made.
