Best Multiplayer Title:
Age of Empires 2

It is no surprise that the best RTS brings with it the best multiplayer gameplay.  After all, real-time strategy games continue to keep the online crowd up into the wee hours of the night.  Perhaps it’s the grand feel of meticulously building your empire and then using it to mercilessly crush down the walls of a real human opponent.  Whatever it is, Age of Kings struck a cord by taking the genre’s multiplayer aspects to new heights.  With the sheer variety of civilizations and units, each match required you to play differently.  For instance, if you play as the Chinese and have superior archers, you better make sure you have protection against the heavy armor of the Teutonic Knight.  Or perhaps playing against the Persians requires you to invest some extra resources into pikemen.  Also, the game’s Regicide mode has players protecting their king, a moving target that can safely reside in his castle…until the enemy’s trebuchets start flinging balls of fire at it.  Oh well, that’s medieval life.
