Well, its that time of year again. The time for good cheers,
peace, harmony, fellowship and, most importantly, gift giving. Now, for the true gamer
among us there is nothing that helps with inner peace and tranquility more than receiving
a small wrapped package containing the best of the best. (Im not counting the
discord that can come from spurned significant others. <g >) With hundreds of new
games released each year, finding that perfect game is a hard task, to say the least. So
we here at Strategy Gaming Online feel that it is our patriotic duty to sift through all
of these released titles just to help you bring joy to that special gamer in your life,
even if its just you. Its a dirty job (there are some real stinkers out
there), but someone has do to it. So without further ado, here is our best of the best
holiday listing.
Rainbow Six
Rainbow Six is an
interesting hybrid game part first-person shooter, part strategy game and part
simulation. Whether this works for that significant other in your life depends on their
gaming bent. If youre looking for an action type game with a special operations
motif Delta Force would probably be a better choice, however, if
youre looking for a game that requires a considerable amount of planning (strategy)
for a relatively short amount of adrenaline pounding action, Rainbow Six
fits the bill. I found it an interesting game marred by a poor manual and some AI
problems. Each mission starts with a mission brief after which a team is put together and
an assault plan made. A considerable amount of time can go into the planning phase since
you can have up to 4 teams each with varying goals. The AI is surprisingly good for your
team members. ("Surprisingly" is the operational word here. It is much better
than I thought it would be but not as good as you really want it to be. Sigh!) In other
words, if you assign them a goal they can usually accomplish it and you will have to rely
on them for most missions. However, it if you want things done right, do it yourself is
the motto here. Once the mission starts you are thrown into a first (or
third) person action game and here reflexes matter. So this isnt a game for the
reflex impaired. Personally, I liked the challenge and mixture this game presents much more than the action
oriented Delta Force. If youre significant other likes his/her
strategy game mixed with a little first person action Rainbow Six is a
must have game.
