One of the keys to a successful UltraCorps campaign is to make allies quickly.racedesk11sm.jpg (4950 bytes) Again, if you are to maximize your tick’s potential, you need as much information as possible. Allies are able to not compete over the same planets, and advise each other on the best method for conquering the galaxy. With an average of twenty players in a game, there is no room for the Ronin. Make friends and forge ahead. Usually, players of a like race form up by sending each other messages through the message center. After the alliance has been created, a newsgroup can be formed for the players to enter and post strategies. On-line communication, similar to AOL’s Instant Messager service, is also available.

UltraCorps was a little too tedious for my tastes. It is a 4X game that is more exterminate than anything else. Diplomacy, beyond making allies, is almost non-existent simply because the only goal in the game is to conquer planets (whereas other games have a council assembly where someone can be voted the "supreme ruler", which allows a strong diplomatic forum). There is no research to speak of, and though it has a great variety of planets, they just do not simply matter much beyond a classification.

The idea of the tick is a great implement simply because it forces players to take their turn once a day no matter what or forfeit it. Than again, it becomes a con theuniversesm.jpg (3573 bytes)because in today’s busy lifestyles, who has time to log on every day to commit to a five minute turn. This became my problem and I was losing turns. Worse yet, some players were complaining that the thirty turn tick cycles were not long enough. So more ticks were added, but not length. In otherwords, every twelve hours a new tick was formed. This meant that I had to log on twice a day to play.

Obviously, the graphics are nothing but functional. This is rather a plus because it allows for a quicker download time. The pictures of the races and vehicles within the encyclopedia are well drawn.

To sum it up, I just felt that I was putting more into this game than I was getting out of it.

It is really designed for a player with a lot of free time on his/her hands. Not to mention a player with a good cash flow since a one-month subscription is $9.95. This is probably the greatest con with UltraCorps. The game does a lot of things well and, if you just can not get enough of this type of game, I recommend it. If, like me, you have only the time to play the best of the best, than steer clear. It is for the hardcore player only.
